Default Is there a correct orentation of the thermostat in the water pump?

I got my replacement Wahler 80 degree thermostat, to replace the 83 degree thermostat I put in during my water pump change. (It used to have an 80 degree thermostat.)

These thermostats have an arrow on them (see where I drew one in RED on the attached picture). That points toward the center of the thermostat.

Is that arrow supposed to be oriented in any particular direction when the thermostat is installed? Or is this just an old-wives' tale? Currently, my arrow points to the 2 o'clock position.

Any prayers for me tonight in removing the dreaded snap ring would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I've not had any trouble with just making sure the spring in toward the engine. Of course you can't get the clip in if it's not.

Oh, I should have been clearer. I definitely intend to install it "spring side in" as shown in the picture.

I am wondering if it needs to be rotated within the waterpump housing so that the arrow points in a certain direction. If not, why would they stamp an arrow on the thermostat? I have 3 Wahler thermostats, all have the arrow. I thought I heard something about this somewhere, but I don't remember now.

May the force be with you young jedi..

The snap ring isnt too bad, borrow a snap ring pliers from AutoZone, make sure that they have "rounded" ends. I have a set of jeweler's round pliers that work perfectly for removal and installation of said "snap ring".

(Writers opinion here) AFAIK orientation shouldnt matter (Good thing we arent in OT!! Sheesh!) on the thermostat, as long as it's seated properly.

I got the tool from performance products for removing the snap ring.

The last time I did this, it was on an old-style water pump. I think the thermostat and snap ring sits closer to the opening on the updated water pump.

I'm hoping to do the whole thing in under 2 hours.

What sucks is that I ordered a full set of hoses, and it does not look like they are going to be delivered today.

That's a GM water pump tool, makes the job really easy.

I drill a few small holes in the metal surround of the thermostat and install with one of them at the highest position to let air through. Makes bleeding easier. Thanks Jeremy Himsel for the tip.
