i am in the market for a radar detector. i have read all of the testing i can get my hands on the only thing i noticed is they all have different #1 brand of radar detector as the winner. what i would like to know is real world experience which would you buy and why? sorry for the no porsche content but no speeding tickets certainly leads to a more enjoyable
porsche driving experience. thanks

i love this topic. you could very easily do a search on this one. it has been covered pretty much once every two months.
the consensus is that most people like the V1.
i have a Bel 985. got it from circuit city. certainly alot cheaper then the V1 and i have had no tickets, and it has saved me certainly a number of times. the Bel will rate right up there with the V1 in almost all range and frequency tests. only difference will be the directional arrows on the V1, but is it really worth the 100+ dollars? some people will say yes.

awoir that is an incorrect statement. radio waves can bounce and reflect off of other objects before reaching your detector setting it off before you can see the cop. also, if you are following behind another car, you may not be able to see the median that well, but the radio waves will still set off a detector.
last, if a cop hides really well on a long flat straight strech of road, and shoots his detector, it can be picked up miles away before you will have any idea he is there. (they do that all the time here in michigan)

I chose the Passport 8500 because it's sold in Europe and the folks at Valentine couldn't guarantee that the V1 would work over there.
Last summer the 8500 saved my a$$ in a speed trap going 140+ mph in Spain in the 951, and I just got back from doing Chicago-Louisville-Chicago in a rental with it at an average of 85 mph and it gave little or no false alarms.
Great reviews in the mags, FWIW. The V1 is probably nicer because of the arrows, but I've grown to like the intensity readings on the 8500. Nice travel case to pack it on trips, like I do.
YMMV

I'm still using my old Passport 5000. Works great. I've always had good warning when there is a trap up ahead, even with laser. Now don't get me wrong, I'm probably a pretty slow driver on this group, but I still like to know where the cops set up their speed traps. Knowing your teritory and actively paying attention to your surroundings are your best bet against tickets.

Had the passport 8500, it worked well. Now I have a V1. I'm not going back. The V1 is head and shoulders above the passport. They both are good, but the V1 is better.

I understand and agree. 95% of my driving is in a 20 mile radius in which I am very familiar of where the traps are located. I feel naked without the detector. Now that I'm back in a 951 again, I feel like I have a target on my back. Oh well, at least I don't stand out as much as I did with the old Guards Red 951.
