Most cops are using laser now so if it goes off - bang, you're dead. Too late imo. I don't even bother using one any more.
As others have noted, laser is relatively difficult to use (cop must be parked perpendicular to traffic flow and fire out of an open window; not all cops are trained to use it) and, therefore, is certainly not your only threat. I've been using a V1 for a year now and can't say enough good things about it. The directional arrows and bogey counter make sorting out false alarms very easy. The sensitivity is more than ample. Frankly, the piece of mind that it gives me allows me to enjoy my car so much more that I wouldn't even consider going anywhere without it.

Would have to disagree in my area about most cops using laser. They simply don't have it my area.

bought a new Bel 985 on eBay 2 years ago for $200 and it has to be one of the best detectors I have ever used - very few false alerts, lots of over the crest warning time, and it WORKS!

Is somehting like that worth the 35 bucks? A "good" detector is too rich for me.

The good ones are far too steep for me too so I recently bought the Whistler 1730 from Walmart for $40 and think i it does a pretty good job - it warned me of police cars with K or Ka band on the highway before i could see them and could see some of those 'tell your speed' signs before i could see them too. I presume the $400 detectors would give you a bit more notice, but i figure you can knock 30-40mph off your speed pretty quickly if you need to. The X band is always going off, but easy to ignore - the K and Ka are the ones to worry about. So I'd highly recommend the cheap Whistlers ones unless you've got cash coming out of your a$$ for a V1 or such.
