I would suggest the V1, had one for the last 4 years, both on my bike and in what ever car I'm driving. It has saved me countless tickets.

i am a authorized dealer for escort if anyone is looking for one. dont have a large mark-up on them put can save anyone a couple of dollars if want one. the escort and valentine are very good radars. No radar is going to save you all the time but if it saves you at lease 1 it paid for itsell. and most town cops use Ka while they drive and it is very easy to do 45 in a 30 and for the peaple who get that ticket you will wish you invested 300.00 on a good detector.

Whats the scoop on the new escort X50. Several independent tests for car mags have rated it better than the V1. I dont really want to spend another $100 for a V1 for 2% better protection since Ive NEVER had a ticket in my life. I dont want something that bulky either.
Also, whats the dropoff in performance from the X50 to the Solo2. I really like the cordless idea. If we're just talking minor dropoff, I may like the Solo2 better?
Im finding myself doing more highway miles in the pcar for car shows and thats where im usually doing 15-20 over the limit (at most). Not a lead pedal but enough to follow traffic in the high speed lane. Still, sooner or later Im wondering if my luck will expire.
One of the things I like about no detector is you drive cautiously everywhere because of thr unknown. I dont think my driving habits would change with a detector, but it would take that "oh **** theres a cop" feeling every time I see one, even if Im going only 10-12mph over the limit on the highway. Sometimes thats fast enough to get pulled over.

Radar detector
Thought I would wade in on this one. My brother has been in the car audio/security business for 15 years. He has sold BEL, Escort, (not sure about the Valentine). He now only deals with K40. Both the mobile unit, and the high dollar fixed unit. That was good enough for me. Of course I am in Va. where they are 'illegal', so I don't have one.

Just bought the Passport 8500 X50. So far, so good. Even gave the warning when the speed trap was shooting at the oncoming lane. Supposedly the X50 gives 50% greater warning against K and Ka band then the 8500. Also, it is now upgradable.

After reading through the many threads on this board I purchased the Valentine. The V1 is the best detector that I have ever owned. The directional arrows and bogey counter are extremely useful. I recently bought the remote mount unit to prevent others from following me and my detector.
