Hmm I'm really considering this, since I have to replace my handle's anyway. Riff you said there was a problem with the lock cylinders working, would they take the lock cylinders out of my current handles and be fine?

Devon-

The lock cylinder fit just fine in the handles I got off of ebay, but the later lock cyl. was longer that the receiver in the handle. The lock would have protruded from the surface of the handle on the ext. From my previous post, I think that these issues could have been overcome, but I did not pursue them.

I do know that it would have been pretty straight forward to frankenstein them into the car, they fit fine on the car and looked nice. The big thing was the lock cyl and swapping out the interior pivoting arm from the old set into the new handles. They looked like they pivoted from the same spot so perhaps there would have been no interference issues upon swapping piece.

One other issue I think might come up is the re-assembly of the handle onto the car body. If you've done the R&R on the handles on the 944, it is not easy to put them back in. THese new handles might be even more difficult. But this is just my thinking until I try them again. MAybe it is time to look up another ebay auction....

I just replaced handles today on the 83. The early lock cylinders should swap out OK with an early VW. The later lock cylinders from cars with the auto door lock feature are longer and will not fit. The VW handles might work on 924's and early 944's up until the introduction of the electric lock. Connecting up everything in the door is another story if anyone has large hands like me; Porsche didn't do us any favors with the design of these handles.
