Search in this and the 944T forum, it's been beaten to death.

Definatley search.

It depends on what you want.

The kit from Speed Force Racing and Autothority uses a shorter lever only while others shorten the linkage.

i tried searching.. but all i get is things between SFR and autothority.. equal good and bad for both.. but nothing on products that shorten the linkage itself or the advantages or disadvantages of shortening the linkage vs. just the shifter. i also could not find any final pics for the autothority shifter.

I think the Autothority changes the rear linkage only, if I'm not mistaken... anyway, the prob w/the shorter levers is that MOST of them will cause you ALL KINDS of vibrations & noise- ask me how I know.... i would recommend modifying the factory lever- like Turbo Tim does- he shortens it a tiny bit, which does shorten the throw a TINY bit, not much, but, you can then use the aftermarket *****, if you want too- the other prob w/shortening the lever is that shortening it, makes it harder to shift- less leverage...

I have the 944racing short shift, I got it just before they closed. Its just like the autothority and I love it. It was a PITA to get on because it goes on the tranny but its worth it. I haven't seen a car with the sfr but I have heard that without the stock shifter you will get alot of rattling and with the sfr you have to buy a shift **** So in IMHO buy the autothority its about the same price as the sfr when you conisdering having to buy a shift **** as well.

what are the effects of changing the rear linkage? does it shorten the throw at all? or does it allow for adjustability?

i shortened my shifter by cutting it down. didn't reduce the throw much but i think it looks better, and at the same time i rebuilt my shifter rod by putting in a new pin.

i might go for the one at the tranny... but i don't think my engine winds down fast enough to use a short shifter. maybe one day with a lightened flywheel...

I've got the 944racing kit for my 968, and it improved an already shorter throw (than my old 944). Did they close, or are they just catching with business needs?

Lot;s of people do the dif lever in order to get an aftermarket ****- IF you like the stock one then it's not a bargain- it DOES shorten the throw a TINY TINY bit to shorten the lever, but, if shorter throw is what you're after, then, the Autothority & other one previsouly mentioned is the way to go- the APE is adjustable for two or three throws IIRC...I think I'm going to go this route soon & use the most conservative setting. I have a Dave Harrington short lever- it is height adjustable at top & bottom- the bottom one is supposed to be set HIGHER to allow the angle of the linkage to change for shorter throw, in conjunction w/shortening hte highet of ****, which ALSO shortens throw a TINY bit- the prob w/the lwoer adjustment is that you can only adjust it a TINY bit higher, or, there is interferecne w/the linkage rubbing...

FYI the 944 racing kit is the same as the autothority without the adjustability.

I love the autothority that I have in my car...

Pro's are keeping the stock shift **** (cant with some short shifts), keeping the stock height, a better feel than the SFR short shift...

Cons are that its hard to install and you got to make sure you loctite or safety wire the bolt that holds the short shift to the black shift rod that heads up towards the shifter itself.

I'll second that. Really, this is the biggest problem with this kit. I would do both. The 3rd time the bolt came out on the highway that was enough for me.

I'll be a 3rd on the above about the Autothority... with a twist. I never had my bolt fall out, but I sheared the thing in half on the way back from 944 Fest 03. I snagged a 10mm from another area of the car, and promply replaced the 8.8 bolt with a nice hard 12. No problems since.
