One of the sunroof guides on my '84 944 decided to snap (no longer going up or down)...likely due to a brand new weather-stripping I installed last month which seems tight and the roof sits high despite it being OEM (but that's another story).
I followed the excellent guides here and other forums in order to disassemble it. Getting it off of the cable was the hardest part and I had to butcher the metal crimp in order to do so...but there is enough cable to get a new crimp on.
Now the hard part: Seems like there are no replacements for this specific part individually, so I either need to buy a whole new set ($1000??), find someone to weld it (got quotes of $250 for aluminum), convert to manual sunroof (seems expensive as well).....OR....FIX IT!
The pictures tell the story, but in total it required a hacksaw to make the grooves, a straightened paperclip to put in the grooves and JB weld to hold it all together.
Will report back if it holds up (I'm betting 50/50 right now...lol)
If anyone has better ideas/solutions, please let me know!
So it broke off when I went to install it (didn't like twisting motion). As someone who doesn't give up, this time I drilled a small hole in the main piece and the broken piece and put a tight fitting nail as a support.
Added the two paperclips back on top and proceeded to JB weld it.
Success! All installed and working for the last few days. Saved a bunch of money buying a new setup and my ego is slightly larger now as well
