On the first rack I rebuilt I managed to put the shuttle on backwards the first time, so it is a possibility. I lucked out and noticed I had put it in wrong before I got the rack all the way together. On another rack I did, the main center bar that the seals must mate to had pitting in it which caused a bad leak. I had to replace the bar and the seals because the bar chewed up the new seals. Make sure you dont have any pitting where that seal normally rides. I did that rack 3 times before I got it right.

yup, got it in backwards. After the initial removal taking about 4 hours, I got to this point in an hour and a half. Gotta love progress....Carefully removed the seal, flipped it over, and reinstalled. Tested twice before bolting back up. Still had to have the neighbor help me line up the u-joint and the splines. Got everything bolted back up and whalllaaaa, power steering!!!!
Impresssions after driving? Great in slow speeds, wife is going to love it. At normal highway speeds, does not seem as sharp and crisp as the "manual" I had prior to repair.
Travis, due to reusing the seal, am I going to have issues? Everything looked OK and I was very careful on the removal and reinstallation. I was just so excited that I found my booboo that I had to try to put everything back together and see if it worked. If I am going to have problems, at least now I know I can fix it in a few hours, rather than the 3 weekends it took to get to this point...
Thanks everyone for the advice, and a special thanks to Travis, for using his caller ID and returning my call to his phone on a Sunday afternoon a few weeks ago. You have no idea how happy I was to hear, "uh, hello this is Travis, were you just trying to call?" That kind of service is more than rare these days.

Tom,
looks good. I need to make that more clear on the tutorial because you don't know how many people get that seal in backwards.
You should have no problems with it. If it doesn't leak now it probably will not start leaking any time soon. If for some reason the seal got bent a little and it does start to give, just let me know and I can send you out a replacement.

this was very helpful, but how about the seal at the top capper thinger for the gear casing? the rubber folds in towards the gears?

The lip side faces the pressure, just like engine seals. Pressure is on the inside of the rack and not the outside so yes, the one you are asking about faces lip side down.

Maybe this will help. The flat part of the seal is always where it seats.

how many of you have reused your old power steering lines? i can understand replacing the all rubber line from the reservoir to the pump, but the rest have some metal ends and im having trouble coming up with solutions that arent out of my budget.

I reused after running some clean fluid through them.

hey! I know what its like to see ATF spewing out your car. One day, i turned on my car and heard a weird tricle under the car, i look, its spewing a pressurized stream of ATF out under the driver side onto the driveway. i turned of the car. Within that 15 seconds, i emptied my system, and now had a nice pond of ATF in my driveway. The damn PS line behind the crossmember, that does a 180* bend blew a small hole in it. That line is spendy too. I'll probably attend to it soon, when the car runs. Travis, you got anything that would help me?
