okay, is there anything extra that might not be explained in clarks garage that i need to know to install a new transmission? any tips or warnings? and also, has anyone rebuilt one of these transmissions? i guess third either needs new gears, or needs bearings that someone mentioned. i would like to fix my "old" transmission too. will be starting the transmission install tomorrow.
I rebuilt my '87 NA 5 speed manual transmission. I had access to a shop. You absolutely need a hydraulic press and transmission gear puller. Everything else is snap-ring pliers, bearing race and seal drivers, feeler gauges, dial indicator, torque wrench, and common tools. The transmission is made by Audi, I had an Audi service manual nearby during the re-build. You may also need some new shims.
Just did that this week (swap, not rebuild). Clalks garage works pretty well. Be sure to do the steps in the right order - Can't line up the bell housing if you hook up the mounts first - duh. Had no problem pulling it by myself. Not sure I would have been able to do the install alone - very tricky to line everything up while balancing the thing on a floor jack.
okay well i had seen it there before, i wanted to print out the instructions for the trans swap from clarks garage......cant find it. ive been looking forever. anyone have any problems following the haynes manual? any tips or things not told by the haynes manual? hopefully you guys will wake up before me and let me know soon.
also, make sure you push the coupler onto the transmission (twords the back of the car. not the front. I made that mistake and it was harder than hell to get out.
\IS THAT WHY THE TRANS WONT GO IN?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! YOU BROKE IT!!!!! no, it said in clarks garage to push towards the transaxel. the toughest part to me was the first bolt. holding the shift rod to the rest. and i also didnt have an 8mm allen socket. i used a regular wrench with an extension slipped over. the wind picked up way too much so the trans is out, but the new one isnt in yet. how many miles did you say were on the car again?
beautiful incident today with being under the car, cold, torque wrench, and my front teeth. and the screws for the shaft coupler? kept stripping. are the ones they sell at sears and lowes strong enough for the job?
Ouch - that doesn't sound like fun. Sorry, no clue about the bolts. No Porsche dealer nearby? I'd be hesitant to get generic bolts for that, altough it seems those particular ones don't really have that tough a job. I'd check with Pelican/Paragon. They might have them and should be able to get them to you quick.
i went ahead and bought the bolts at a hardware store. supposedly they are above grade 10........ the stock ones say 12.9 but i also figured they are just going to be used in a clamp, plus the groove will help keep them from moving. but this is my firstt porsche transmission.
I checked PET for the bolt. It's number is 931 421 240 00. I don't know that there is anything special about it, but they usually list generic bolts with a size and a number that starts with N.
I just took mine out yesterday and the bolt closer to the transaxle was longer than the other. It was also stripped at the top. I don't know why that would happen.
