Default What is the cheapest price ever paid for a 944 running or not...

By anyone here on the list?
There is a 86 951 I drive by on my way to work everyday. It has been sitting in a front yard on the lawn for about four months now, not having moved an inch in recent memory.
Yesterday I stopped and asked the owner about it. He is a local mechanic and says the starter is out. I asked him if he would sell it what he would sell it for. After much scratching of his head he said $2000.00 if he sold it. It runs but does not have a starter installed. It is an absolute mess. Although it supposedly has an 89 gear box with LSD. There isn't any part of the interior that doesn't need to be replaced. The header panel is dented and the valance is cracked. My thoughts are it might be fun to either make a track car or take a 951 through a total restoration over say the next three years as that is how long I have left at this duty station. I may go by with $1000.00 cash around the 14th of April cause he was complaining about tax time coming up.

I paid $1000 for "Herbie" four years ago. (164,000 miles, 85.5) The car ran but it needed a lot of work. The first year was spent replacing and rebuilding things: timing belt, water pump, rebuild starter, rebuild alternator, rebuild brake calipers, new brake pads, new rotors, new konis, front stabilizer bar bushings, salvage yard steering rack, new master cylinder, new clutch slave and master, etc.

Then I took it for a drive to the car wash...

...proceeded to strip 6 teeth off the pinion gear! Car was down for another 6 months while I rebuilt the transaxle. Replaced the clutch and pressure plate while it was out. Fun job

Now "Herbie" is fun, reliable transportation. I'm getting ready to put the little bugger back on the road for the spring-fall driving season.

I'm sure there are others who have paid less - but the cars would really have to be in bad shape. Your plan to offer $1000 cash is a good call. I wish I could have found a 951 for cheap - the 944 N/A is in definite need of power.

Good luck

I paid $1800.00 for an '87NA with a bad starter ring gear and a busted starter. The car had 240K+ miles.

I've put some significan sweat equity and cash into this car and it is a reliable daily driver.

Hmm first drive the car see if it actually runs. A starter is a cheap item and easy to install so I don't see why he hasn't installed one yet. There is probably a lot more things are need to be replaced. One 1k is a good price running or not for the 951 now 2k is getting to be scary when the car hasn't moved in 4 months and he says it's only the starter.

1000 I could see - 2000 sounds like a ripoff for what is obviously a piece of junk. Once you get into it, who knows what else it'll need. The front of engine stuff alone will cost 1000 and/or hours and hours of your time, turbo rebuild, trans, etc. Might be better to just part it and take the money and get a decent car.

Few things are more expensive than a cheap Porsche. Even if you're planning to do all your own work.

If all the major components will need replacing, what's the point of buying a money pit?

I think you'd be better off saving your money and buying one in good shape.

Uh.. correction.. NOTHING is more expensive that that cheap Porsche..

Buy a good example to drive. there are plenty out there. Get all records and talk at length with the current owner. Car lot sales guys just want "that freakin thing" off the lot.

.........Unless you want it for parts. then a grand looks ok.. I'd bet 5 bucks the valves are shot. pull the belt cover.

Ok My plan is to get a good example. In fact I have had several long conversations with Dave at promotion and he is looking for a red 951 to build for me as I type. But If I could get this wreck for a $1000.00 I "figger" a tub and an engine and a LSD tranny, the parts running ro not will be worth that. I was just thinking it might be fun to tinker with as either a track car project or maybe a slow (as it was put) sweat equity project. If I get it I will post pics.

$1200 & $1400.

The $1400 car became my race car after merging with wrecked 924S.

The $1200 car is my current autocross car.

Heck runs great now I fixed a oil leak, put in new shocks, New front control arms, spare seats, steering wheel shifter from the 924, Wheels from $1400 car, (cookies went to the spec car), new spark plugs, manualy cleaned injectors, It actually had new water pump and T-belts already, A/C works and just needed a charge, new heater valve, new tires.

Still needs brake rotors and there alot of noise from the manual sunroof, no water leaks however, paint is pretty bad.

No a bad deal for me as the engine an wheels made it worth it parts alone. The fact that I had some spare interior bits helped make it pretty easy to fix-up.

Of course doing this without knowing what I was doing would have been a pain.

We had a long thread awhile back on what we paid for our 944's.
The lowest price for a 944NA was $900 for a 1983 and the lowest 951 was $3500 for a 1986.

IPSC, any word from the a$$clown yet?

Not a word. The nice letter seems to have had no effect. I am pulling back the cover on the Arming Switch to sick the legal hounds on him. I "figger" a three pronged attack via FBI internet crime, Ohio States attorney General and Lastly the IRS. I know an auditor there as well. It might be extra interesting to see if he is reporting his extra income from the sales of all these cars. He has three Porsches for sale at the moment and is some kind of car broker. For who I don't know... YET. This guy doesn't realize he has become my new hobby.
He now will not answer any long distance phone calls. I have had people from all over the country try and call him. However his home number is from time to time busy. If someone local wanted to drive to a pay phone and call this cat and ask him "WHAT THE f&*k?" I would be very greatful.

I paid $600 for a 1984 944 N/A and yes it did run!!! it was a 4 out of 10 but it ran great. It was at a local car lot and they wanted $1000, I offered $500 and he said "No" I said "ok, see you later" he said "700" I said "600" and the car was sold . I think it was $680 with tax. The only thing was the fan switch was stuck on and the fans would run down the battery. I sold it on EBay for $1900.
