The cooling fan runs quite a bit at low speed driving. In a half hour of suburban traffic the fan ran 6 times. Average speed was around 40 MPH, but with plenty of stoplights; although nowhere near city conditions. Outside temp around 60 degrees.
The temp guage makes it up to 50%, then the fan kicks on and cools down to near 0%. A few minutes later the process starts again. The car has never overheated, this never happens unless I drive under 35 MPH, or idle at traffic lights.
Is this normal? Should I replace the thermostat?

Did the fans eventually (not more than a minute) cut off when you turned the car off? How long have you had the car? Could be a low temp-fan switch such as on mine.
Car never overheated so the thermostat doesn't seem plausible. I'm betting your fine. Just keep an eye on the gauge and be cognisant of the underhood temps when you shut the car down.
BTW, my fans cut on and off frequently in traffic but then again I'm much further south than you.

Thank you for the replies. The temp guage has never exceeded 50% (the 12 o'clock position). The fan kicks on and cools it back down. The fan kicks on at most every stoplight and immediately stops when I turn off the engine. Sounds like this is normal?
