ashtray-cupholder
Has anyone ever thought about moulding a piece that would fit in where the ashtray is that could be a cupholder?
I dunno.....just if I had the ability to injection mold some plastic I would replace my ashtray with a cupholder.....seems the only decent place to one anyway

Great idea, but not financially practical. I'm a materials engineer and have been in aerospace for 25 years, with considerable experience with injection molding. I know the search for a cup holder.
The cost for molds for injection molding are astronomical. $50-100K is not uncommon. The injection mold machines are set up to run 24/7, spitting out as many parts as possible (toothpaste tube tops for instance). The number of 944's, integrated with the number of folks willing to buy a cup holder just would not make economical sense. Too few buyers, too high a price.
I just gave up and bought the model that mounts to the console fastener on the passenger side and folds up when not in use. $35 on ebay, but it was the best of too few alternatives. I had to get one after spilling my beverage of choice & making the cockpit much too odiferous.

Good thing this thread came up...
If you guys are looking to put a cupholder in your car, I recommend the 9xauto cup holder...check out the pic!
I bought it on ebay for $35US...yes I know that is pretty steep, but I got it as a gift.
What i recommend to you is to check out the site HERE and buy the cupholder itself (if you do a google you can find it cheaper), and make the bracket yourself. I didn't have the means to make a bracket and couldn't be bothered, plus it was a gift so it was easiest to buy it.
All you need is a small piece of sheet metal, score 2 lines and bend it into a sort of Z-shape, and drill a hole in one side. It uses the existing screw on the side of the console, and hides and folds and tucks right out of the way...barely visible with black interior.
I'm really happy with it, it's really sturdy and sleek.

i thought about putting a couple cup holders on the backside of the glove box door. they have ones that fold up so you can fold down the door and put you cups there, just an idea though. it might be a little out of the way to grab it while your driving. if i try anythin ill let you know.

Friendan - The one you have requires drilling into the console doesn't it?
I kinda like this one since it requires no drilling, holds two cups and has a pocket in-between for your cellphone.
They're only $15 on Ebay.
I had also seen one ebay awhile back,I beleive, that went into the ashtray spot and was retractable. when closed it was flat and when opened it popped out a ring for your drink.

Target also sells cupholders that will allow you to hook up to the air vent:

IIRC, it's around $9.95.

Too bad bcsytems no longer has a site or is out of business.
They had the ultimate cupholders.
Several different models, lotsa different colors, even some made out of titanium.
Supposedly spill-proof since it mounts to a rotating axis.
This is the only pic I could find of one.
