Default Hood Insulation

Seems the hood insulation is a bit on the crumbly side on my 1983 944, still waiting for spring!!
Why would that be? I had the car checked out all over when I had the safety and belts done. Everything fine. Due to very cold weather?
Anyone have ideas as in remove and replace?

Oh, does it have a habit of falling off? What's a guy to do?

The stuff tends to disintegrate over the years and eventually leave a mess over your engine bay. If you want to get a head start on removing it, ive read that a combonation of 3M Adhesive Remover and a plastic scraper are a good combonation. My car has something aroubt 60,000 miles on it, and the stuff was lone gone before i bought the car in 2002. The only remains of it are the adhesive all over the underside of the hood.

Some figure that the insulation is too prevent damage to the paint on the hood, in partiular the area over the headers. But Porsche stopped using the stuff after a certain year...i forget when i have a feeling it was around '88-89. To those who replace it, they use a aftermarket replacement...the type with the reflective bottom.

Is there a more original looking replacement than the reflective material? (Other than the expen$ive factory replacement.)

As for taking it off - I used a shop vac. Threw a sheet over the engine and just sucked the stuff right off. You'd be surprised at how easy it came off! Now the glue.... Well, that's another story....

I almost wonder if you couldn't just use rigid insulation (preferably foil-backed) as well - that stuff lasts forever and it'd be probably 20 bucks for a 4'x8' sheet of it at the Depot!

Not that I'd do it personally, but it might be a viable idea if you're on a budget. . .

On my'83, I think I got the insulation kit from Performance Products. I want to say it was $80 for both sides. It was the original style (at least it looked like it).

On my '88, I just have them removed, and the underside of the hood waxed. I think the '89's didn't come with the insulation. Removing on the '83 was a PITA, but I removed the hood on the '88 to be re-painted, so I was able to just lay it upside down on a padded box. Makes removal muuuuch easier.
