Reverse A Problem After The Car......

mine is quirky like that too, both my '83 and '84.
sometimes i have to nudge it forward a bit first with a different gear, then try to put it in reverse, must be that i have to get the gears to mesh. give that a try, the straight teeth and no syncro on the reverse gear make it a tough sell sometimes.

I put the clutch in, put the car in 3rd, then put it in reverse.
If this does not work, I put the car in neutral, let the clutch out, then back in, then do the 3rd to reverse again.
Either of the two techniques work every time for me. No grinding into reverse, either.

yes, the problem is the straight cut gear in reverse. When you have been sitting for a while at idle, with the clutch in, there is nothing spinning in the transmission. Unless your dead on with having the gears mesh, it isnt going to go in. Solution is to let the clutch out in neutral, its speeds up to engine idle speed, and then you can get it to line up.
