Should the chack valve "ball" have resistance? I'm talking about the one, when you take off J pipe. Bcuz when i press on it, it slides down and does not come back, does it have some kind of spring? or not?

Rattlint
Rattling noise...
So I had this on a customers 968 last fall. Sounded like the variocam
ended up being low oil pressure.
his pickup was cracked. When cold and pressure higher wouldn't be so bad. Oil thins out. Pressure drops can't provide sufficient to the top end.
if you have bad mounts or ever run balance shafts our of sync. Very possible. He had all 3.
new pickup reinforced support. Good as new. Noise gone instant.

I had variocam rattle on my black 1992, replaced the variocam unit and pads, although the old ones were in great shape. Noise was gone for about 4 years but then it came back. Previously I had slightly low oil pressure but it was the rod bearings at 150K + miles. Now it seems to be back but meh, it seems harmless. just a slight "brrp" when the unit switches states. Unplug the variocam unit and the noise goes away.

Drifting
kinda looks like the intake cam is newer than the exhaust so i would make the assumption it has been apart before.
check the oil for steady oil pressure and i would pull the ball and spring in the oil passage at the rear of the head.
if those check out, pull the cams. the lower pad may be junk as it is on the pull side. ( call me crazy but i pull the cover and oil the lobes and chain if its been parked a while.)
the vario assembly should be difficult to compress by hand. boing717 had a thread on this but it looks like it has been wiped...with a cloth.
