Take a good look at the plug. For some reason, the plug on the sensor side will get brittle but the engine harness side will be fine. Here is what mine looked like. When I went to pull it apart it just fell apart.

I was just razzing you - I had a Vette too. I just thought it was funny that you used a GM name on a Porsche site. No offense. Everyone can chill out - If I showed up with MyCamaroRulz as a screen name, I bet you all would razz the hell out of me too.

I had a similar problem. The car would shut off and none of the gages would work, although all the accessories did (a/c radio etc). It was the electrical part of the Ignition switch.

Hey, "vette4lyfe" (eek!) After all the drama about your user I.D....back to your original question...a shop in L.A.
Call "Strictly German" at 626/440-1242, 2435 E Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena-Talk to Duran, he's the owner and incredibly fair. Just dropped my car (also an '87 NA) off there this morning for the Tbelt, Waterpump, Front seals job and it looks like I need CV's too. Duran has done a lot of work to my car and has never missed a trick.

Good call Dan.. There are a lot of possibilities here and a good diagnosis is almost as good as having it fixed. Sometimes it's better to get a pro wrench involved. It will always save you time- but cost you money.

I've had a lot of luck dielectric-greasing every underhood plug I could get to. Also, next time it won't start, try just giving your speed/ref plugs a good wiggle and see if that helps. This was my procedure upon no-start for a while and it never failed to work (for a longish but unspecified time until I had a different starting problem). Eventually I greased the plugs and e-taped one together tightly and looped-twist-tied the other. Worked for a couple months - but I don't know if some more recent problems are related or not.
