If it wasn't a frontal impact, how come the front of the car is all smashed up?

Wow...that's quite shocking...from the looks of it that A3 was modded a bit...strut tower bar, rims...
Doubt he survived...I don't get it, in Germany you have a huge long stretch of road to go as fast as you want whenever you want...why would you speed elsewhere?

Still looks staged to me...car ripped in half but no dirt dug up where either piece landed?

Exactly! Too many people think that in the event of an accident, ANY accident, the airbags will deploy. This is simply untrue. There are sensors in the car that detect where the collision is occuring, and if there is an airbag related to that area (front/side for now), then that specific airbag deploys.

Also: you may have heard of dual stage airbags? These airbags will deploy at a faster rate (ie greater force) if the sensors detect a more forceful hit.

And one more thing: not all frontal impacts will trigger an airbag to deploy: they only deploy when the force of impact reaches a certain threshold.

We (I work for Mercedes Benz) get this all the time: people suing the company because the airbag didn't go off.

Car might have been in the air...

Anyways umm... The driver would be dead... I mean his seatbelt for one prolly ripped him in half or decapitated him (Look at headrest). Well I guess thats a downside to B-pillar mounted seatbelts..

Also on a side note 40mph will in a pole - tree collision like that will rip a car in half...
