Most chips for the 944S2 just remap the fuel delivery and up the rev-limiter.
I think the main idea of that chip is that it requires you to use higher octane fuel, and so it can change the ignition timing to give you a little extra power.

Ditto. For $130 it's worth a shot.

IIRC, there is an adjustment that you can make on the DME to advance or retard the timing. The site said you needed a special 3 sided tool to turn something, but he made his tool out of a golf Tee.

Steve and I traded email a few months back about an chip for my S2. I am convinced this is the right way to go - but had not (at that time) decided how long I was keeping the car. I will probably get one shortly - the only thing worrying me now is my high milage (260k kms).

Here's what Steve had to say about the chip...

Hope he doesn't mind my posting this - it's good stuff. This does not necessarily apply to any "tweaked" new versions - so contact Steve for the latest news and pricing.

"About the chip:

The rev limit has been raised to 7050, well within the reliability of a stock S2 motor. The timing is optimized (read advanced slightly, more than slightly after 4500 to redline) and the fuel mapping "window" is such that the car will go rich more often then lean, unlike the factory RoW emissions programming that has to run on the USA emissions dyno for 50,000 miles without going dirty. Your local (if they even do them) IM 240 emissions tests will never know the difference, since the testing doesn't go into the meat of the powerband and the standards are relaxed on a used car with miles. Expect 14 horsepower and improved drivability, better off idle response and a more noticeable transition when the engine comes on the cams.

The S2 is a particularly difficult engine to extract more power out of. Porsche didn't leave much on the table with this engine. Short of radical cams/compression/engine management, you can do the usual modifications; a chip, cone type filter drawing cold air, and an open or low restriction exhaust, that's it. Look at what Porsche had to do to the 968 engine to get another 29 horsepower (compression/variocam/intake-exhaust tuning)!

I don't believe anybody out there is making any great claims for S2 chips... On a very short list of mod's for this engine, this is the best bang for the buck. $165 includes USA shipping. I accept cashiers check, money order or Paypal.

The install is pretty easy; just pull the false floorboard on the passenger side right under the dashboard. The top of the carpet pulls down to reveal a black wooden cover held on with 4 Phillips screws. The silver box mounted to the "H" shape bracket is the computer. I can give you more detailed instructions on actually doing the chip replacement if you go that far. If you can upgrade a computer or do basic auto maintenance, you can do the chip install. "

His e-mail address when I bought mine was WYNNCLAIMS@aol.com
Unless he's changed it since then. Give it a shot.

Oh, and 14 hp is probably a bit generous. Didn't Tom Pultz dyno his car with the chip and got about 7 or 8? Not incredible, but you do feel a difference..and its pretty inexpensive compared to a $500 exhaust system or something. You'll also notice the engine sounds a little more raspy with the chip due to the advanced timing..pretty nice!

Their pricing is similar to the Powerchip, and again...i need to see a dyno before i spend money. I understand why we get so many inquiries about chips though. I can spend $500 on a chip in my GTI and see gains of almost 50hp. Coming to the S2 similar chips are offering like 8hp.

EDIT EDIT!!!! : What was in the 1991 944 S2-SE (club sport edition) the UK had??? That was pushing out 220 instead of 208. Was that a different factory chip?
I take it your GTI is turbo?

7-8 at the wheels is 8-9.5 at the flywheel... not bad for $165. If it really is 14hp, which it might be as Steve has produced impressive dyno charts with some of his chips, then great. If not, you still won't find a better $/hp out there!

Does anyone know if he does chips for the standard NA? I'm considering buying one this summer If so, how much have they shown to help? I was looking at a kit in Performance Products that consists of a Weltmeister chip, a K&N dropin, and a throttle respose cam. They claim it adds almost 20hp. I emailed them for more specific numbers and a possible dyno chart to prove it!
