AndyK - I got my Toronto about 4 years ago at Crutchfield. They were closing them out. Funny thing, my 968 came with an Alpine AM/FM Cassette with 6-disk Changer in the rear cubby. All very nicely installed. I hated it, took the Blau out of the 944 (re-installed original Reno), popped it into the 968, swapped the subwoofer from 944 to 968, and put the Alpine with Changer into the wife's minivan.

As a side note, I also have a Blau Thumber Remote for the Toronto. I never installed it as the reach from wheel to stereo is so small.

The Toronto is pretty simple and with the pack of CD's in the glovebox, I don't mind changing them. It is about the best looking match for the inside of the 944/951/968. Did you notice the adjustable viewing angle feature! Kinda cool.

The Nakamichi was would be my first choice since it looks factory and has the correct illumination. However, look at the price of this sucker! Its probably one of the best CD tuners you can buy.

I have an old blaupunkt nevada in my 914. I like it because it doesn't stick out with all the millions of colors, and it's subtle and seems to match the interior. And really, how much oomph do I need in a 914 for sound?

My kingdom for a tuner that also receives weather band (162.400 - 162.550 Mhz). How nice would it be to receive the local weather forecast no matter where you are, at the press of a button.

That Nakamichi is a very nice looking piece.

Dave- Yeah, the angle shift, color shift are really cool. The Toronto was the top-dog back a few years ago. Did you also notice it's made in Germany, and not in Asia!? Supposedly the last Blau to be made there.

The thumber would put a dent in the leather wheel I bet. Otherwise, I find the radio pre-set buttons hard to get to when I'm in 1st, 3rd, or 5th gear! A remote on the wheel might be cool.

The Nakamichi CD45(?) was rated as having poor FM reception. The Blau never has a problem pulling in the stations!

esan, I bought a Madison, too, for the exact same reasons. Haven't connected it up yet; too cold in the garage. How hard was it?

As amatter of fact, I have two Madisons. Bought one used, but mint, then found another, new in the box.

I have mapped out the wiring to be done on paper, but would be interested in any big surprises. How did you connect your antenna amplifier?

Well, the previous head unit the car came with when I bought it was a Kenwood. It was very basic simple installation since I just copied the wiring from the Kenwood to the Blaupunkt. Pretty standard stuff. Red for power, yellow for memory, black for ground, etc..

Its nice that there is a lot of space behind the radio to that wires can neatly stack up behind there.

Hmm..The antennae amplifier..I just found out a few days ago searching this forum on why my reception sucked. I guess there is a thin black wire coming out of the antennae cable that was not hooked up. I read a post that this wire is to be hooked up to the blue wire of the head unit (amp turn on).. I did that but still bad reception. I think what it needs is a switched 12V power and not the amp turn-on..I will try this tonight and see what happens.

My Blaupunkt Monterey looks exactly like the Reno in Charlotte944's post. Could this have been original, or do you suppose that it was a replacement for the original Reno?

If memory serves the Reno has 4 speaker outputs, (SQR-46) and the Monterey has 2 speaker outputs (SQR-23).

If you have a front/rear fader in the center console, then the stock radio had only two speaker outputs.

Interesting. I do not have a fader, but I guess this settles the issue as to whether my Monterrey is stock.

I just went on ebay out of curiosity, but I found this. Looks pretty good and I think it would work in a 914, with the faded yellowing dash lights and all. What do you guys think?

Might be a good deal too

I recently got the San Jose model. I wasn't even thinking about matching original deck. Looks like you got a good match. The flashing lights are annoying. What is worse is driving in the country at night the face becomes a very bright light. Have not found any dimmer on it at all.
