Not to hijack your thread but in reply to Jim 944S. The car runs great. It has a fresh head rebuilt with around 8K miles on it. The problem is the frame damge to the front clip. It isn't that bad but very noticeable. I have all the body panels to put on the car(except for the windshield), I just dont have the time for this project. I have to get my S2 running first and out of the garage then I'll decide on what to do with the S but most likely I'll part it and get another one.

Back to the thread at hand. I saw a head on Ebay that's been refreshed but has two cracks in it, hence its going for $20 dollars. If you bent a bunch of valves then I would get this one and pull the valves to put in your head.

Thanks for the info guys. With the tool kit on 9x auto (http://www.9xauto.com/944.html ---> 944 series mechanics tools ---> 944 Mechanic Sprocket Tool) is that a pretty reliable tool for setting the tension? $500 is quite allot for a tool that will receive little use (the one Porsche used). Also if I go with the water pump the ones out of the turbo flow better correct? List of stuff I Plan on getting:

Timing belt $31.95
Balance shaft belt $44.95
Alternator belt (might be less at local auto supply) $29.95
Tool kit (9x auto) $65
Valve and guide kit (might as well) $200-$279
Head gasket set $99
Rollers (where to get?): ?
Machine work (hot tank, install valves/guides/seals. Check for straightness and cracks): ?
Water pump: ?

Total minus cost of rollers and machine work and water pump: $549.85

Anything else? I just want to make 100% sure before I put in the order for parts. Sorry about all the questions but a newbie has to learn somewhere.

Here is a belt and roller kit Ebay that has pretty much all you'll need as far as the belts and rollers. I bought a kit from this guy for my S2 and it got here in three days. You can also get an entire gasket set Ebay for $99. This is kit has all the gaskets. Might as well since your in there. This is from 9xauto so I dont' know how much they are selling for at there store.

Anybody have any thoughts on a 2 angle vs 3 angle valve grind when getting the head recon'd?

From what I understand, most shops do a 2 angle grind which is good for a standard rebuild. But a 3 angle grind would bring the valve to the ultimate position for performance.

Is it worth the extra $$ for a NA 44?

Thanks.

Zim's in the Dallas - Fort Worth area has the best prices (IMO) on these parts. They will have rollers/ belts / water pump gasket.

Also...

6. 944.100.901.00 Head gasket set 924S94483-85/194485/2-90 All 83-88 69.95

I think everyone orders the "updated" water pump with the guards now. You would have to modify your timing belt black plastic cover to accomodate it.

..................

I just did my belts/rollers/waterpump without the sprocket tool in the 9xauto site.

I used an adjustable wrench, and a long-nose 90 degree angle pliers (11") from sears.

You could also get a spanner wrench from Harbor Freight that would work for holding the balance shaft sprockets.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=41243

I don't think the tools they are selling are worth $65.

..................

Have you also added a flywheel lock to your list of tools to buy? You will need this.

I was mostly wondering if the tension meter was worth it. Thanks for the heads up on that site. I will definitely get the stuff there.

Note to new buyers. If the previous owner can't provide a receipt showing last belt change, assume he's lying. Awful but true.

A rebuilt head on e-bay for $100? Dubious.
