Thanks for the part numbers. However, they have me quite confused!

A search on Sunset Porsche's site shows that 94434713900 fits left side for 924 manual rack (my manual rack is "924 derived"). But, the years given are 1987 & 88! Didn't know they had manual then? Furthermore, the accompanying diagram shows the same bush for both L & R.

However, the result for 94434713700 suggests this fits both L & R of both power and manual from years 87 to 91.

One thing's for sure: the bushes off my old PS rack are different L & R (L is shaped as a "D"). When searching for manual rack bushes on Paragon, they also show two different shapes for L & R.

Can anyone clarify?

As an aside, for once it is refreshing to see parts prices that are cheap

I can only offer a small piece of experience: having just replaced those bushings on my '91 power rack, they are definitely different parts. As you correctly point out one side (driver's side in my case) has a "D" shaped opening, while the passenger side has an "O" shaped opening. Given how they fit on the rack I don't understand how a single part number would work on both sides.

I can't speak at all to the manual rack but the shape of the power rack and where it mates on the machined surface of the crossmember really requires different pieces.

Good luck

Yeah.. just looked at the PET and it has the two part numbers--one for each side--pretty clear. In PET, though the diagram shows the same reference (ie. part "7" or whatever) for both sides, the chart listing has 7 and 7(a) with one for L and one for R.

Sunset's descriptions are a little confusing.. odd. Confusion solved. PET is the reference!

I just ordered the two part numbers from my local dealer. I never ask those guys to confirm anything; I've noticed that all they do is read from the PET just like I do.

I'm crossing my fingers for you, of course, but I've noticed that in some conversations I've had with parts suppliers that they're going from the same source I am, which is PET. The only issue happens when PET is wrong, which happens occasionally. Case in point: the cam cover bolts for my car (number needed of each type) seem to be wrong in PET. It's always jarring when I run into those kinds of issues.

Not wishing that to happen to you, of course! I'm just always surprised about it and it tends to set me back a bit of time trying to sort that kind of thing out.

Good luck

You think that's frustrating.. try calling Porsche Parts and asking for special tool 9116 -- the bolt to centre the rack. Twice, I've ordered this and both times received the big one for a 928! And each time the wait was a month, coming from Germany. Luckily, it's only $5 lol

FYI I stumbled upon a Porsche special tools catalogue where I found what must be the correct part number for this tool. I included it in my bushes order today. Let's see what shows up

That is the correct part number. Though it’s easy to just make one as it’s just a bolt with the end ground down into a point. Here’s mine:

Nice!

However, I'm missing two things:

1. M10 x 1.0 bolt
2. Competency to grind such a nice end

Well there is that.

For me I’m a cheapskate and didn’t want to pay Porsche $5 for a 0.20c bolt.

The suggestion has been made that the rack with rubber bushes will wiggle as in my video (normal ) at standstill with weight on the wheels (I filmed with front wheels up on a ramp).

A prominent member has offered to investigate & see if theirs acts the same

It also appears that my installed bushes are correct for this rack: I'm told by the supplier that left driver's side (gearbox end) is 40mm so bush 94434713901 (a revision of 3900?) and right (passenger) side is 35mm which for this rack is a VW part 171 419 884 (Mark I Golf). I have the same on now (except my right one is a Meyle equivalent).

This rack is quite strange indeed!

Today, while driving around doing errands, I asked my wife to briefly film the steering wheel. Perhaps I'm a little to OCD on this one... really, the "off-centre" after turning doesn't even show up on the camera
