Default '91 S2 Cam Cover Bolts and Hardware

Hi there all-

I'm afraid I've run into an issue where PET is wrong but I don't have the experience to know for sure, so I'm hoping someone here can help me. Ian at 944online has been kind enough to help me, but it seems like he's pretty sure that what is in PET is correct.

PET (and 944online) indicate that you need 10 long bolts and 3 short bolts for the cam cover. Looking at mine, it really seems to me that the S2 should be like the 968, with 9 long bolts and 4 short bolts. This is based on inspection of the underside of the cam cover and how the casting on the corners comes down lower than every other place for a bolt. There are 4 places for bolts and there's no corner on the cam housing that is raised relative to the others. Can other chime in with their experience? This is my first time getting in there on my (or any) car so some reassurance that I'm not missing something fundamental would be appreciated.

Second, the 3L engine for my year (I don't know about the 968, I haven't looked at PET) has a 928 part number. I get it and know that they share other parts, as well (alternator, for example). But take a look at the drawings in PET below, and please help me understand why certain hardware is not called out as necessary on the 944.

Here's the 944 cam cover from PET:

Notice the construction with parts 12, 13, and 15

Here's the similar part from the 928:

Notice the construction for 31, 32, 32A, and 33

For the short screw, there is an extra sealing ring on the 928. Any ideas what that's not used on the 944?

Finally, on the 928, PET calls out way more than double the short and long cam cover bolts than what the 944 requires. I haven't opened up the hood on my 928 yet but what gives? More PET weirdness?

Thanks, as always.

Cheers

Hello Zirconocene. I just happen to have my engine apart for rebuild and I just went out to the garage to have a look today. I have a 944S (16v) but I'm pretty sure the heads and valves covers are the same as the S2. I definitely have 9 long and 4 short valve cover bolts (as shown above as 14 and 15 in the diagram). The 4 short bolts go in the corners or the valve cover, then 5 long down the centerline of the valve cover, and then two more longs on each side.

I can't really guess the 928 has an extra oring/seal on some of these bolts. I know mine has never leaked oil through the valve cover bolts.

@Braymond : Thanks for looking, it's appreciated. I've been trying to come up with how you could possibly get away with only 3 short bolts and totally failing. I'm glad I'm not out to lunch on this.

Cheers

thank God I found this thread. I managed to shear two cam cover bolts UN doing them when addressing a slight weep from the cam cover. Read everywhere it was 10 long and 3 short and have been utterly confused when having to reuse one short bolt and had a long one spare!
