Default Timing Belt Slip and Valve Damage Question?

Hey Everyone,

My 91 944 s2 cabriolet died on the street the other day while waiting for a stop light. No noises, no bangs, just shut off. After getting the car home and inspecting, I found the timing belt teeth stripped off. Balance shaft belt was fine, but the timing belt was stripped of all it's teeth. I replaced all rollers and slapped on a new balance shaft belt and timing belt. Car runs like crap and as if it were running on only 1 or 2 cylinders.

Does this sound like bent valves? or might the timing be off. I triple checked the timing marks and everything lines up perfectly. Would the car even run if some or all of the valves were bent? What else could it be?

Thanks for any input.

Nick

i dont think the car would run if the valves were bent. No compression. Although if there were only some cylinders that had bent valves then that would explain that it sounds like that.

Hey your from Racine...There are like 3 rennlisters right by you....myself, BCass944, and Mmurky....We are going to be hooking up this weekend at brett's place in Kenosha to do his timing belt..you should stop by and meet us....

And as far as your problem, I am not familiar with a S2, the engine is a bit different..Also if your valves were bent or the timing was off, the car would not run...Check spark for all 4 cylinders, something electrical it sounds like....And if you think one off your valves is bent, do a compression test and see...If it is bent it willl leak more than likely..Im sure someone will have the magic answer...

Do a compression check it will tell you if your valves are bent or not. It sounds like you maybe bent some valves on one or two cylinders. If not you are really lucky nothing bent.

Yeah, the car will run with some bent valves, that's probably the problem. I wouldn't start it again before checking it out, you're screwing up your guides.

Better pull the head and replace the bent valves before you go any further. You also need to replace the cross over chain and chain tensioner.

Hopefully you didn't break the tensioner support off of the head or strip the gear teeth off of the cams. If you have then you are looking at a minimum of $3,000 if not close to $5,000 to fix it.
