German name pronunciation
Hey,
For all you Gernam speaking folk out there... I'm planning on naming my baby with a nice and appropriate German name.
The German name (all forms) for "temptress" which I thought was more than suiting... is:
LORELIE, LURLINE, LURLINA, LURLEEN, LURLENE
...I like the 1st one, but can't figure out the exact pronunciation. Is it "LOR-ell-ee" or is it "lor-ELL-ee" or "lor-ell-EE" ...or am I wrong all toether?
I might still just choose one of the other forms, Lurlina or Lurlene.
Help me name my baby!!

Ich weiß nicht, was soll es bedeuten,
Daß ich so traurig bin,
Ein Märchen aus uralten Zeiten,
Das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.
Die Luft ist kühl und es dunkelt,
Und ruhig fließt der Rhein;
Der Gipfel des Berges funkelt,
Im Abendsonnenschein.
Wow, I remeber that one from way back when! If you want to spell it the German way it is Lorelei, hence Die Lorelei

Lorelei is a beautiful and unusual name. Gary has the pronunciation correct. I only ever knew one person named Lorelei, and oddly enough, she was Korean.

best way for americans to pronounce lorelei is to say the name laura and add the word lie (as to say a lie)
laura + lie ->>> Lorelei
This is why I hate english. Dipthongs never stay the same. But in german, they almost allways do.

Hey I remember that poem too. Had to memerize it in German class about 30 years ago. If I remember right, Die Lorelei would draw (temptress) sailors towards a small island where they would crash against the rocks. Kind of like the Greek Sirens. Now do you really want your daughter to be known as a temptress?

Kevin:
Congratulations on the pending baby! Lorelei is a pretty name. And now I've got that Styx song running through my head. I think I have an MP3 of it somewhere. Good luck!

In German, generally (in other words, as far as I can remember), with an 'i' and an 'e' in either sequence you always pronounce the second one. That's why 'Lorelie' is not correct but 'Lorelei' is. I also agree that none of the other names you listed were German. They seem like southern US names to me.
The Lorelei, according to legend, was the spirit of a young woman who hung out on a certain bend of the Rhein (there's that 'ei' thing again) River and sang to passing ships. The men on the ships would be enchanted by the beautiful singing and, not be paying attention to where they were going, would crash against the rocks on the inside of the corner, sinking their ship. Very similar story to the Greek legend of the Sirens as was already mentioned. In both cases I'm sure it was a story told to the ship owners by sailors who just couldn't handle the change in conditions as the river went around the corner or were tyring to hit the apex.
I also agree with previous posters that it is a great name (it's definitely better than the others you listed). Lorelei was supposedly a very beautiful woman with a beautiful voice but she also had a dangerous side. Sounds like a few women I know (and rather appropriate for a 944).

Well, I went looking around for German names and found this site:
http://www.20000-names.com/female_german_names.htm
So I dunno if they're really German or not... but I like the name, I like the meaning, and now I like the pronunciation... it's hers!
