Default "Novice Mechanic"

I was looking at the Paragon Tech article on Rod bearing replacement and they say the Level of Difficulty is "Novice Mechanic". So does this mean any average mechanic can do the Job? I was always thought that Rod Bearings was a major job.

The company I work for has a part time mechanic. He used to own his own shop but went out of business. He works Mon-Fri at a general repair place and says he works on allot of VW's.

If Rod Bearings can be replaced by a novice, What else can be done? T-Stat? CV Joints? Shocks? ect...

Maybe I am nuts for even thinking this...

Do you need to replace your rod bearings? Everyone has to start somewhere I guess, but a lot of stuff needs to be removed to get to the rods -- front suspension, cross member, etc. The one helpful thing is that there are very few problems you can experience that cannot be solved by people on this list who have "been there, done that." Check out Clarks-garage.com for more info on working on these cars.
