Default Gas Gauge

I have a 1986 944 n/a. My gas gauge needle never goes below half a tank. When the fuel level gets low, the light will come on. I know this is true when I fill up. Is the problem in the gauge or the sending unit. Does the sending unit in the tank also control the light on the fuel gauge?

I would definitely check the sending unit, clarks garage has a good testing algorithm to isolate the issue.

This may help too, if there's commonality with the 924 - how to clean the sender:
