I tried going through the door opening as well, but my head was too fat to see down the hole (somehow this just doesn't sound right). Besides, I do my best work when I'm flat on my back (that doesn't sound right either).
On the locks - the one thing I've found is that Porsche really didn't announce or document changes very well. It seems that they would find a better way to do something and then just implement without waiting for a model year change-over. As a result, it's not unusual to find cars that have differences where you least expect them.
One other thing - I had the advantage of knowing the basic workings of the locks from my 83 944 I had so many years ago. The early 944 series cars did not have the "plate" installed and you could get to the locks easily by simply taking off the door panel. As a result I was very familiar with how the handles went on and off (still took me about 5 hours to do side one on the 951). But i had a good idea of what was suppose to be where. Luckily it hadn't changed much.

They would be really cool if the handle itself could be pulled to open the door, rather than the little trigger. I love the newer style handles being used by some car makers. Just grab the handle, and pull. Very easy.
The 968 handles do look more modern. If it wasn't such a PITA, between installation, and painting, I would do it too!

I received my handles today, and went to the paint store and left amazed. 1/2 pint of paint, quart of basemaker, quart of clearcoat and a pint of clearcoat catalyst......$76.80. Anyway, I'm shooting the color coats tomorrow!

That was a good price I paid 150.00

Bought a new gun too (gravity fed hvlp) to the tune of $150 so these handles have gotten pretty expensive, but I'll have enough paint to shoot a splitter also, and the new gun is a nice addition to the tool chest. My old guns were siphon guns and were pretty worn.

OK, you guys need some economics classes. Got my door handles AND aero mirros painted Guards Red by a local shop for $125 total. They even gave me the left over paint for touch up. No fuss, no muss, no worry.

Ok, handles are painted and clearcoated, and the passenger side is installed, but I'm out of daylight. It only took about an hour and 15 minutes to install the handle due to a handy tool I used to remove the ballcup on the actuator rod. My wife has a small hand weeder about 12" long with a flat spade tip about 1" wide with a "v" notched in it. The "v" fit right behind the ballcup and popped it off on the first try, and was the perfect solution to reinstalling it also. Thanks to Keith for your handy detailed instructions, I printed them off and they were a great help! Handle looks great and works perfectly.

Geez......color is $35 a half pint, though mixes 1:1 with basemaker to make a pint. Clearcoat is $20 a quart plus the additional cost of clearcoat activator. You must have very good friends with extra paint in your color lying around!

I just picked a body shop at random. The guy never looked at my car. He said, "All those blacks are based on the same formula" or something to that effect. Came back two days later and picked'em up. Perfect match!
