83 944 work
I was fiddling around with my 944 and noticed several things. There is a hose near the rear of the engine that is open and not to anything. That goes to a diaphram on the driver side of the engine. Any ideas what this is to?
I hope the pics come out.

This crap here looks like it goes to the o2 sensor. Can anyone enlighten me about these wires? what goes where?

In the same pic you will see a part with a broken wire. what is it and what is supposed to go to it.
Please respond using the numbers. I wanted to keep the same thread.

1. I could be wrong, but I think someone else had this pop off and ask about it too lately. Check the bottom of the brake booster cylinder there, (the piece that the master cylinder connects to)
On the bottom side, there is a hose fitting, at least on my 85.5. and it has a hose much like that connecting to it. I think its a vacuum line for the brake booster.

Small vacuum goes to the valve on the oil filler under #4 intake runner.
Yes that is a patch in for the O2 sensor. I never did like the plastic plug that is still mounted to your fire wall. But since I still use mine I'll gladly take yours!
What bothers me is the missing bracket you have on the fender well. This is usually the location for the test plug on the later models. Kind of like this is a later chassis or someone had a later DME set up in the car.
Where in Orange county are you?

1. The vacuum hose connects to the thermo vacuum valve that is under the intake manifold by the fourth spark plug. Here is a link to one for sale on ebay

2. I have an 83' as well and can't find the red wire yet...
3/4 The broken black wire on the left side of that black/orange cylinder does go down to the oxygen sensor.
In your third picture there is a connector that has two wires-one brown and one black...that is unnattached on my car and I have no idea where it goes. Your picture is the only one I've ever seen where it is actually attached. It looks like it is connected to two white wires??
Hope this helps

The wire under the "valves" (which are for the evaporative emissions system) on the driver side of the engine bay MAY be the wire for the alarm system hood switch.
The rectangular 2-wire connector (brown-black wires) supplies +12 volts and ground to the heater element in a 3-wire heated O2 sensor. Non-California cars do not use this connector.
Anyway, from what I can see in your pictures, it appears that someone has "hacked" or "shade-tree engineered" parts of your electrical system. It would really be helpfull if we knew where that large red wire is comming from, and what it is going to.
The black wire in the large round conntector at the centerline of the fire wall is supposed to go to the signal wire of an O2 sensor.
The stray vacuum line goes to a temperature operated vacuum switch which is mounted under the intake manifold near #4 intake runner. The other side of this "switch" goes to the front most vacuum port on the throttle body.

Socal, I live in Garden Grove. 714 530 5520 If you want to meet up.
Thanks all for input. Charlotte, the big red wire is actually a cover for 3 wires going to the o2 sensor. This is seen best in pic 2. There is another reddish wire the goes from the rear driver side to the hl motor but this is not seen to clearly but in case you were talking about that one.
I failed emissions horribly. Do you see anything in these pics that might help that? I am going down to look for that vacuum switch.

You failed emissions because your O2 sensor isn't hooked up! the black and red wires in pic #2 are no worry.....they're some sort of option not used on '83 american 944's.......i'm not sure about the later cars though

If my o2 sensor is not hooked up then how do hook it up? I found where that vacuum hose goes. There was a spot for it after looking closer. Also: What in gods name is this? You can see where it goes in pic #4. Part# is 477 971 252.

That last part, as far as I know, is just a connector. The passenger side of it should run down the the O2 sensor. The 83 only had a 1 wire O2 sensor, so I'm not sure why there's a three wire in there?
Regarding the second pic, I have that same unconnected wire in my car. Not sure what it does, but it doesn't hurt anything being disconnected. It sounds resonable that that's a hood switch for the alarm.
