i gutted my cat on my 944S and I don't really recommend it. it did not seem to add any "seat of the pant" horsepower, and now i have that annoying buzz that IPSC was talking about. there is nothing in there - I have already checked. it just seems to make some bad acoustical noises now.

Dave - what kind of high flow cat do you have? i have been looking for a good one to work with my S. Cost? Does it have to be welded in place by a muffler shop?

Interesting, you didn't notice any real gains? I am worried the buzz that is stating in my stock cat will only get worse. I am thinking of doing the addition of the galss pack to my "test pipe" later this month. I just have to find an exhast shop that will do it. I noticed you owned a 951. How much more powerful did the turbo feel as compared to the S? I am searching for a 951 with check in hand at the moment.

IPSC - there is no comparison between the 944S and the 951. the turbo is so much faster, even without the addition of any mods it's still faster. the power is more linear in the S, but certainly it's slower.

with that being said, the S is still quick enough to get me in trouble and to let me learn how to drive fast before trying a really fast car on the track.

I'll have to dig out my receipt folder to be sure but I think it might be a Dynomax. It's a fairly common part at speed shops, $80-90 IIRC. I did my research in the archives and a couple other 'listers are running the same brand (maybe even same part number, didn't specify) I'm not sure but I think Manning might be one of them.
I had a muffler shop cut out what was left of the stock cat (rust off at the front of it) and weld in the new one along with 9-12" of pipe as the new one is much smaller and lighter, another $50. Didn't feel any seat-of-the-pants change at low RPM, but it feels much better above 5K RPM. I don't know the condition of the old cat, I had no indication that it was clogged (just corroded) but I also don't know that it was still at 100% either.

I could neither conferm nor deny that I may have ever gutted a cat, but I would not think it would be much different that a rabbit.

Gudging from the varied replies, there appears to be more than one way to gut a cat.

Sorry, I couldn't keep that bottled up any longer.
