Question Porsche Cars' numerical value

I don't know if somebody had asked this before but i've searched and got irrelevant results. So here it is...

What do the number mean in Porsche cars? Do they represent cylinders, valves, etc.? Does the "S" stand for sport? Why is it 924, 944, 928, 911, etc.? What does the 9 stand for; how about the 4, 8, or the 1?

I've always thought that the last number in 924, 944, and 928 represent the number of cylinders.

The universally correct answer to all numeric questions is 7.

By the way the numbers for the Porsche were second choice due to a copywright on numbers with a 0 in the middle! It was supposed to be a 901! Not 911. However 928 (8 cly) 924/944 (4 cyl) Hmmm I think it was moderately random.

Porsche models are named after project numbers. For example, the Boxster is really model 986. The 944 Turbo is model 951. The most recent version of the 911 Carrera is the 996. Nobody's sure about the Carrera GT or the Cayanne yet.

It is the internal design number. The 911 was originally numbered, 901 but Puegot already had the rights of the '0' in between two other numbers.

So, basicaly, they were more or less designed or thought up in the order they are numbers. Normally...

911 (901), 912, 914, 917, 924, 931, 928, 944, 951, 959, 968, 964, 986 (?), 993, 996...these are just the most known ones.

I don't understand the 986 one though, it doesn't seem like it goes in order.

I've seen several references to the Cayenne as being the 955.

Perhaps Pre-Pugot dibs on the "0" or since they were not street cars it was OK.

Not sure.

Yup. Peugoet (sp?) said their claim to x0x numbers only applied to street cars.

neun, neun neun?

There's more of an "Oye" sound in the middle.

It was still a good joke!
