Default What would you inspect or replace in a replacement transmission?

The original 5-speed in my 1983 944 track car build gives a clacking sound with every revolution of the wheels. The wheel bearings are new, so I bought a replacement trans with a short fifth to replace the bad trans. The replacement trans has been sitting for five or ten years and might have had a whine. The PO raced 944 cars, and had this as a spare. He didn’t remember it being bad, but thought there might have been a whine.

So, I’m either going to swap it in directly, or investigate it and refresh it before swapping it in. I’d love some feedback on what typically goes bad with these transmissions to know where I should start. Also, any general thoughts on what should be replaced at this age.

Thanks,
Camelman

Just got done replacing mine with a used unit. U can check the ring and pinion but as far as anything else I'm not sure. Just make sure put new oil in it.

If you are thinking of rebuilding it, contact Kevin Gross at Catellus Engineering. He is the guru on 944 transmissions.
