If the noise increases while putting the load on one side, that's probably where your problem is. With the early 944s like yours, the rear wheel bearings are considerably easier to replace than with post 85.5

BTW, don't do the weaving test drive right after having some brews with your buddies.

P.S. Running the car on stands wouldn't help you detect the bad bearings because it's only produced under load. You can, however, try turning the wheels with the car in the air. Also, any wobble/play in the wheel is a pretty sure sign of bad bearings.
Tried that and dodn't notice any change while weaving.

Then put the car up on stands and try wiggling the rear wheels. Are you getting a sporadic noise or a constant hum?

If it's constant humming/groaning noise, I really think it's the rear wheel bearings. At least that's always been the case in the 10 years I've had my 83.

It is more like a thumpung. Originally thought it was a bubble or something on tire.

I'd say have a look at the CV joint/axles, on the rear. Mine was making a click sound on the rear when the bolts on one end of the axle were loose (one of the 6 bolts had actually broken).

Alternatively....may be someone know if the torque tube is balanced in any way.

Do you feel anything through the steering wheel when you hear the sound.

It's not a click or a hum it seems to be a thump. It is pretty regular and seems to get faster as the car builds up speed. Still not sure if from front or rear however, i do not hear it in reverse.

Default New INfo

Jacked rear of car up,, started it and gave some gas to spin rear wheels. Still heard rhythmic thumping noise but not as loud.

When spinning wheels by hand right was able to spin about 1 revlolution the left spun about 2/3 of the way around.

Wheels seemed tight but when turning by hand (not spinning) heard a click when I changed direction.

OK, grab hold of an axle shaft and see if it will move between the tranny CV and the hub CV. That would indicate loose CVs to say the least, but I still think this may be wheel bearings.

What are the miles on this car, and have the rear wheel bearings ever been replaced? Mine first went bad on the 83 at about 115K, but they could have already been replaced by the PO since I bought the car with 88K.

I have an issue just like this I found out it was the strut, it's rubbing against the coil. Or i found that mine was. It usually happens when you turn also? Or going over any sort of bump? I would jack the car up to a point where it still has some wieght on the wheel, then take a look at the wheel well. See if there is any sort of oil like deposits on the walls, and to see if the strut is 'true' or if it is off.

Miles on the car are either 87,000 ir 187,000. (only off by 1) the only thing that affects the sound is speed. No difference when turning. I hear it when on gas, off gas, coasting in neutral or with engine off and rolling. the speed of the car just makes the sound slower or faster.
