Cool Replaced lighter with 12v socket.

Since my cigarette light was useless for charging my cell or any other accessories, I decided to replace it with an actual 12v power socket. It was a pretty easy install and looks factory.

First I bought the 12v socket from Pep Boys, blade type quick disconnects and 12 gauge wire from Radio Shack.

After I removed the dash trim and cigarette lighter I had to trim the 12v socket to fit using a saw to remove the bracket and a dremmel to trim it.

Before:

And after:

I also had to trim the dash trim to accept the power socket. These tabs had to be removed and the internal diameter had to be shaved to accept it.

This is what it looks like with the 12v socket installed after trimming. I used the cir-clip that originally held the cigarette lighter in place.

I made two jumper wires with double male quick disconnects to connect the 12v socket to the cigarette lighter connections.

Side view:

I then reinstalled thee trim as normal.

I took all of an hour or so from start to finish.

It should work. Mine did not. It was very hit or miss with the charger.

The stock socket is not as deep as today's standard, so may of today's accessories have spotty connections unless you physically hold them pushed in there.
