samgrant,

just about 180k on original motor and tranny.
she pulls hard, doesn't burn oil, no smoke, no leaks

PO put ALOT of money into it. paint is 18 months old, all new exterior rubber, restored interior, well maintained. i'm replacing the entire suspension/bushings as we speak. The way i feel about the car right now, I will probably elect to rebuild the motor when the time comes. I feel there has been so much invested in the car i'm compelled to keep going.

then again, i was surfing the porsche listings on autotrader, one never knows.

It's tough to say how long it would take since I only worked on it a couple hours at a time. But I'd imagine that you could get it torn down over the course of a weekend. My only advice would be to avoid poutting it back together immediatly if at all possible. They recommended at least two weeks because the paint would be soft and various trim pieces would leave indentions in the paint. Plus, it'd be easy to scratch... (effin' screwdriver on the passenger door... all the neighbors got to hear what I had to say about that... Fortunately (unfortunately?) that scratch got repaired when the car was hit last March.) And in my case, it actually took several months to fully harden, which is about my only complaint with the whole process. They said that my case was a fluke, and I'm willing to believe them as the guy was actually willing to repaint the car if problems arose.

So, if possible, give it as much time as you can to let it sit. Which is hard, especially when you really, really, really want to drive it! Fortunately, I had a Carrera that I could drive during all of that, which helped.

Beer burner, I'm looking to do a simple strip down on my 86 which will be painted in 3 weeks. I want to take the bumper guards off, front license plate frame and door seals, but leave the door handles on so that they can still open the car doors to drive it out to the parking lot. How hard is it to remove the front bumper???? I will reinstall it back on the car after i remove the guards and lenses.

If you look under the front bumper, you'll see holes for two bolts (17 or 19 mm, leaning towards the latter). Unscrew them and pull the bumper out. Make sure you disconnect the wires for the lights before you go too far with the bumper. It's just that simple.

Weird about the paint. For one thing, I thought Maaco baked their cars so you didn't need to let the paint cure. Thanks for the tips, though.

I suppose it's possible that some might. Mine didn't, though. Or at least not for very long...

Mossy,

It was an Isuzu Impulse non-turbo (They were know as the Isuzu Piazza or Isuzu Jr in other countries). I used to see one or two others here in town on rare occasions, but none lately.

I ended up selling the Impulse to someone in Quebec where they are even more rare, since they were never sold in Canada at all. Great little car though...
