How long can a 944 run without coolant?

Thanks for the input....I known that engine damage may total it and I might lose a great car....but I also don't want to be left holding the bag on a $3000 rebuild in a month......sounds like I am probably ok...mechanic says it moved the radiator back and the powersteering pump belt sawed through the hose, so it may have been a slower leak than I thought...when i noticed the enigne temp going up, I turned the heat on full to help cool it down ( I didn't know what was wrong at the time) but no hot air came out - so I am assuming that coolant was gone from the heating system at that point....

Any other thoughts on this? Is there a way to tell about engine damage from over heating other than a tear down? Should I insist on a new water pump?
