Question Rear Wheel Bearing Replacement

When I bought my 84 944 three years ago I had Midas replace the right rear wheel bearings. Big mistake, it needs to be done again. I've done wheel bearings on VW Beetles and such, so I guess this is the same sort of thing. How long does this take (including bleeding the brakes when I'm done), and are there any things I should watch for on this car? I've already got the 36mm socket for the axle nut (left over from Beetle days).

Hi Lew,

It's less difficult on early cars than on late ones, although I'll admit I haven't tackled it myself on the 83 for fear of the axle nut, since I understand you may need an impact tool to get it loose.

Other than that, it's pretty straightforward and the parts are generic VW parts (I believe they're the same bearings and seals as a VW bus or transporter).

For the actual procedure, check here:

Look under Garage Shop Manual.

Good luck with it!
