Default Cruise Control Tempermental

OK - latest stupid question:

Recently, my cruise control has been intermittant - as in it comes on only when it feels like it. I checked the connection at the actuator (under hood) and read the Clark's Garage info. about it. Seems like the next course of action is to pull the computer out of the car, crack it and check the solder connections and general cleanliness of the circuit board before writing it off. C's G claims the computer is "just above the hood lever in the driver's foot well" - a silver box. I stuck my head up there for about 10 minutes and all I see is the Motronic box (DME) fuse rack, fuse box (with the plastic cover), and relay rack. Am I blind?
