Nope... they fed you a line. I have personally emptied 2.5lbs of Halon and 2.5lbs of Tri Gas onto a 15'X15' pit of flaming gasoline. Both killed the flames in short order. (and I had a ton left over)

50% of putting out a fire is the material used, the other 50% is the method and process to kill the flames.

I've been thinking about fire protection for a while now, and I'd like to know the answer, too -- the best I see is $98.95 for Halotron at Stable Energies ($20 more for cool-looking chrome). Anyone know of a better source?

Perry,
Could you possibly recommend a size for a halotron extinguisher to carry along in the car? I want one because the car I am working on now had an engine fire and I would prefer to not go through it again. Will a 2.5lb one be enough to carry around or should I go ahead and get a 5lb? Any advice would be great. Thanks in advance.

I just ordered a 2 1/2 pound Halotron from a local place here in KC. Only a 100 bucks for a chromed version! Can't wait for it come in.

Great thread btw.

The best price I've found is this one: http://www.apachechemical.com/310/9423.htm?654 at $79.50, but I don't think it comes with mounting brackets. Best I've found with the brackets is this one: http://www.westpacmarine.com/amerex/halotron.asp , $92.75. That's a lot of money for a bracket.

2.5 pound is good enough for most vehicle fires, especially when you are right there when it lights off. If it's burning bad enough that you can't put it out with a 2.5, it's a fire YOU should not be fighting.

I apologize for my smiley face / exclaimation point laden posts on this thread earlier. My 9 year old brother got in and decided to make a few posts to rennlist like his older brother does. I've deleted the posts

I was wondering what that was. I liked it, you should put it back.

Too bad that Halon (CFC's) depletes the ozone layer, it sure puts out fire. totally illegal for sale up here cept for military and grandfathered for existing installs, mostly computer and telco rooms.

It appears Halotron is available up here and works well, just get the big bottles, nothing like beating up on a fire and running out of juice just when you've just about got it out.
