Default 924 Turbo 1982 on sale

Hi everyone,

I’m new to this forum and I’m looking for some useful and reliable advice concerning a Porsche 924 Turbo 1982 US that I’m thinking of buying. It’s on sale in the Ontario area for 12500$, but there’s no trace whatsoever of maintenance and service records. Having read how fragile the turbocharger without regular maintenance is, I wonder what this 924T really is worth buying.
Thanks a lot for your professional help.

Alex

The turbo issues mainly came from not letting them cool after driving, meaning let the car idle for a min or two right after your parked. That price seems high especially with no records but if the condition is more restored and can tell theres evidence of extensive work done I would say it may be worth it. They are indeed a fairly rare car. Me personally at that price would get a 951 instead but thats me.

If you really want that car , get a thorough PPI done and take it from there. Chances of having all service records for a 37 year old car are very slim.
The absence of service records is not an indication of how the car was maintained , as a lot of people on these forums maintain their own vehicles and asides
from sales receipts for parts , there is no real validation for service records !

I'm sure some of our Ontario friends can suggest a good resource for a PPI on that car !

Forgot to mention ... you might want to post this in the Canadian forum section, lots of Ontario members !

I just make sure to cruise at speed for atleast a mile or 2 before shutting the engine off if I've been into the boost..

The Turbocharger is basically the same as what is on the 944 just not water cooled..
If it doesn't smoke on a cold start, or anytime, it's probably fine..
Even if the turbo goes that's just a good opportunity to build a better turbo for it

The wastegate is another big one that you want to make sure works, by trying it..

The ignition on the S2 931s is the scary part because new crank sensors don't exist, so many people put S1 ignitions on them if they fail..

If the CIS is in good working condition it will probably last forever as long as it gets used occasionally. It's dead reliable as long as you don't let the car sit for too long.. Drive it..

Hmm, that's a lot to ask for a 931 in Ontario. I've seen them for a whole lot less over the last few years. May I suggest you consider a 1987 924s (early 944 engine and transmission) for less than $5000? You can do much with the money you've saved. When you find a more affordable Turbo you can sell the 924s for what you paid for it and know that your decision is well informed. As an example, my friend at Competition Motors had an early 951 with records, knowledge of previous owners and the car was pristine. He would sell it to me for $14k. By the way, there's a nice '24s on Kijiji.

This looks like an excellent one for $10k CAD..
http://924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=44270

What are you going to do with the money to the S?
You could also buy a more average condition 931 for under $5k and with a little money/time make the 951s nervous..

These $10k 931s are garage queens though so a buyer would probably be interested in them for a different intended purpose.. Probably want that for collecting or an investment..

Condition for condition 951s are more than twice as much money, probably much more expensive to keep on the road, and 931s are twice as rare as 951s..

Turbo rebuilding is the exact same as a 951. They have the same parts inside them as far as the thrust washers and journal bearings, same turbine as the 951S, bearing housing is the same spec..
Just don't shut the car off when the turbo is still glowing red hot is all.. It needs oil flow while its hot or the oil in it will burn..
Have a look at some of the insides.. youtube .com/watch?v=k9GYa_u1z6I
You can put whatever k26 or k27 compressor you want on them..
The 931 also has a 930 BOV built into it's compressor housing, which is not fragile.. 931 has the massive 930 waste gate which is quite robust..

Something else cool about the 931.. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/aud...abbit-029-1021
$18.28 for a timing belt job

Look at that beast of a closed deck block and massive bearings..

I think they are underestimated.. They just need a good intercooler and some more boost..
With a bigger compressor, an intercooler, and $130 ARP head studs you can make 951 power in a lighter car..

No power steering leaks either..

Hi Cyclone, Wildcat, Curtis and fasteddie,

Thank you so much for your feedback. I've been trying to negotiate with the seller but it did not go very well and the car's has been sold. I'm now looking into another option that came up. Will see what happens next.
I'll keep you posted.
Cheers,
Alex
