Hi,
What would i have to do to convert my early sunroof mech. to the later model one. I have a chance to buy the motor/relay/microswitch part but do i need to fit a new cable?

Way in the hell would you want to do that.

First check the rear hatch area drivers side, that's where the motor mounts, or are you saying you have a power roof, and want to upgrade to the newer one?

Maybe, but other than the mechanical bits (Which should line up) I have no idea about the details between older and newer powered.

In the factory manuals there is a 20 or so page section on updating the older three gear box sunroof to the later two gear box sunroof. You will need all of the parts and possibly the interior trim piece that covers the gear boxes.

PM me with a good e-mail address and I can start sending you the pages from this section.

I just last weekend replaced the completely striped plastic gears in my 87. I was driving home on the freeway in a rain and windy storm and I look over to my right and see 3/4" of daylight out my sunroof! Time to fix.
I have no idea about early mech or motor mechanisms but I do know that the cable is required to mate to the gear teeth on the new systems. You better check the mounting of the motor first. Clarks garage and Pelican tech notes both have good articles on sunroofs.
