Paint Job
I just wanted to see of the people who have gotten a GOOD paint job, how much was it, and did you have any minor body work done then too (filling minor dents, etc.)? Did this include removing trim and replacing door handle gaskets, etc?
Basically, how much was it, and how extensive was it?

It depends on the type of paint, color (same or change) and depth of body and paint work (ie. exterior only or door jambs, rear deck jambs and under the hood).
Ask around town for recommendations.
Good luck!

Thats why I'm asking! I want to see with VERY minor fender dings or whatever, how much did people pay. AND POST THE EXTENT AND QUALITY OF THE WORK...
My car is Ruby Red Metallic, so it may be more, but I'im just looking in general...

I was rear-ended by a dump truck at a low rate of speed. His front license plate left a rectangular dent on the rear of my car just below the spoiler. His front bumper also pushed my rear bumper down by a quarter inch. Bill (paid by insurance) was around $1400.

rent a spray booth from a body shop and do it yourself, it'll cost you around $400 for materials and you'll have the best. 2 part urethane paint and clear. most places will rent you a gun for like $15 and if you pester them they'll even show you how to do it. when your done rent a polisher and buy a system one polish kit which is designed for no nothings in a body shop to be able to turn out quality jobs.
It's easy and it'll look great the only hard part is making sure it's properly masked and there aren't any dings.

You probably won't get many responses sepcific to what you are asking. Most of these vehicles had an excellent paint finish out of the factory lasting many years.

I got my 944 painted for $1500. I believe i got a little discounts since my mechanics body guy painted it. All the windows, bumpers, seals, mirrors etc were removed. I bought new emblems and hood badge also. I had a bunch of door dings and a little dent.

$3800, but I also had FiberWerks front spoiler and rear bumper put on. There was about 14 hours of labor involved with that. I would call it a top quality job. I think the key to finding a great job at a reasonible price is to stay away from the big chain collision places. They would rather make money off of insurance companies (easy money) than deal with individuals. Find a small shop that takes pride in their work. I had minor dings and stayed with the original color. CarStar wanted $9200 for the same work.

A while ago, I went to earl shibbe (it wasn't on the Porsche), The Fiat was painted butterscotch with minor dings and dents removed for like $500. It actually came out beautifully, I might even take the 944 there and get a higher quality paint job.

Don't do it yourself if you value your sanity. BTDT. Sure prep work is important, but it takes quite a bit of practice to lay the paint and clear coat without runs/orange peel/etc. I think I spend 6 months from start to finish, and there are still imperfections.
The price you pay all depends on what you want. A chain store paint job will be shiny for a couple years, but you'll likely have some overspray to live with and the paint will have to be stripped if anyone ever wants to retrieve a quality finish from it. Stop by some local shops in person. Tell them what you want and have them show you what you can expect. And tell them that you're shopping around so you can hear the dirt on their competitors. Then make a decision.

I am going to do the prep work myself and get a pro next door to do the painting...this will save me a bit of money and I still have a hand in it.....I will have to push the car about 50 feet and when he is done push it back in my shop and finish the rest.....

Did it myself, been doing body work and painting for about 8 yrs now...I think when I did my car this last Fall, Materials cost me about $400 and over 100 hours of my time.....And this was painting everything, and mean everything except the engine bay....Usually we get no less than $2500 starting price...Depends on how bad the car is...?
