Hey Guys,

I have been looking at the PET CD and it appears there is no difference between the 86 and 87 951 brake calipers, even though the offset and suspension are different.

Can someone confirm this is right? Is there any difference in the brake calipers from 86 to 87 on the 951?

I believe the brake calipers themselves are the same it's the spindle that is different for the late offset. Anyone else let me know if I'm wrong. I don't think I got it right out of my head right in this post.

while were asking brake questions, does anyone recomend a fluid over Motul? How much should I buy to completly flush the system? Should I purchase 2 pints, or 3?

The calipers are the same. I use Castrol SRF fluid. You should only need one can to do the system. It's expensive but you will only need to change it once a year.

That is incorrect, calipers are NOT the same. The parts maybe superceded at this point (I doubt your PET is dated to 87). The calipers are interchangable if you swap the whole axle, but parts themselves are different (87-88 non S cars have a larger piston on the trailing side of the pad by 2mm if I remember correctly).

The PET CD-ROM only shows replacement parts that you can buy at the dealer, NOT what was originally on the cars. In '86, the 951 had front calipers with 38/36mm pistons. The '87+ cars had 40/36mm pistons. The '88-TurboS had the same calipers as the 928-S4 and those are 44/36mm pistons. All these cars had the same rear-calipers at 30/28mm.

BTW -a really good brake-fluid to use is the Ford Motorsports heavy-duty DOT-3 fluid. About the same dry-boiling specs (550F) as Castrol-SRF or Motul-600 for 1/5 the price (wet-boiling is not as good, 290F).

That's not entirely true either, some of the original parts are still in there. Forexample the intake hoses under the manifold for an 86 turbo. Infact every piece under that thing is still sold through the dealership, and shown in the PET as per the original car. The updated parts are also shown, but only for the appropriate years. In the case of the calipers this isn't true, as they discontinued the earlier calipers (I'm guessing).

Exactly! That's what I'm saying. If you can still get the parts from the dealer, then it'll be in the PET. But if it's a discontinued or updated part, like connecting rods, it'll only show the replacement part. Looking up a con-rod shows only the cast version that you can get at the dealer, but not the forged part that came on the 951s.

FYI, I installed 968 non-M030 calipers on the front of my '86 951 without having to swap axles. It was a direct bolt on.

That what i was hoping for someone to tell me. I have a set of non-M030 968 calipers that i was going to try and run with a 86 951 turbo suspension to retain the proper offset for my car!

If you do this conversion, try to find a set of 4 late offset 16x7 wheels, like D90's or Phonedials. That way you can be certain the wheels clear the calipers and also don't foul the fenders.....
