Question CV joint exhaust clearance

I replaced the muffler on my '86 NA 944 and noticed that the clearance between the top of the exhaust and the CV joint, whenn jacked up, is only a few fractions of an inch. Once the car is on the ground the clearance is a little better but still small. I only replaced the muffler, kept the old pipe.
I'm thinking I could wrap that small section of the exhaust to protect the CV joint from heat, but I might remake the back section of the exhaust with mandrel bends.

Should the exhaust pipe run under or over the axle? There is a suspiciously large amount of space above.
