Grinding
I just recently acquired my dream car, a 1985 Porsche 944, everything was going good until i decided to be a teenage boy and do burn outs now when In gear it makes a horrible grinding noise and won’t pull the noise is coming from right below the shifter, i am new to Porsche and i would love to fix my baby. Any help is much appreciated. Normally someone would think it’s the trans but it has a transaxle, so what would go bad right under the seats?

If it had the old-style rubber centered clutch then that's blown. Pull the starter and look for chunks of rubber. It's not bad news as they do not last forever, would have needed to be replaced at some point.

Dear Cody: Just pull the starter and you should see the rubber chunks. If there are none or very few, then the next step is to go to the transaxle area..Undo the drain plug and check for heavy chunks of ferrous metal...If you have metal there, It's R&P time. These cars have a known weakness there and don't tolerate much abuse if they are pretty high-mileage cars. Then it's time to pull the transaxle and go into that. Is your car an early or late 85? If it's an early, (I have an '83) I hope that I can help. The later cars 85.5 and later are a totally different breed of cat...they look they same and some parts will interchange, but many, many do not.Totally different systems and parts. Hope this helps some.

When the rubber clutch center fails it doesn't usually sound like grinding. Better indicator is a loud click or 'clang' when you put it into 1st normally.
It's pretty common to blow the ring and pinion doing hole shots in these cars, and I believe that will sound like grinding.
