i wish to plead the 5th.

ok ok.. last year major valve falure had it repaired before it did leave me stranded (i was on a trip.. in cali when it happened, but you all know this one) im lucky i didnt blow up the car before i arrived in santa barabra.

flat tire last year before the trip used a spare and was on the road again

fuel pump failed last year on the trip.. relaced it on the side of the road

broken generator pulley last year.. what a joy to replace. wasnt stranded... got home but had to replace right away.

valve spring broke this past spring (i just noticed it when i pulled into the driveway.. luckily no major damage)

this years trip the throttle cabel broke as i pulled into a truck stop in the middle of wyoming. the cable (looks like a coat hanger) was brazed back together by the wrench in the shop.

i now have either a bent, warped or burnt exhaust valve.. after all i have spent in getting a valve jopb done this passed spring i am obviously pissed. i limped back home from san francisco at 60mph the whole way, and again am lucky i didnt blow up and do not want to discuss it.

please dont say the v word in my presence again.

btw.. did i mention murphy is my co-pilot?

Generator pulley wasnt THAT bad Harry- juist had to borrow a few tools from a local Porsche mechanic!

It was more... stubborn.

I've had insanely loud kocking coming from my engine 3 times, and almost every rear end noise available. I have nightmares with those sounds in them.

Sorry to hear that Harry, you worked so hard to get it done right. Was it #3? maybe time for a new co pilot.

no, its #1 exhaust this time. im doing it right and sending the heads to competiotion engineering this november. right now, i cant do anything except for save the money to be able to afford to have competition do them. its my fault for going with a local shop and reuning the old valves. the shop said they looked fine though and would be ok to reuse.. still.. i should have just spent the extra 400 for new valves.. but then again if they were a competent shop they should have told me if they shouldnt be reused.

im actually thinking about going with dual valve springs this time. but then again that can cause undue stress on the cam and isnt really worth it unless you have a racing engine.. but then again we all know my history.

my compression is 155, 145 and 155 on the other 3 cylinders. #1 has 115 compression and 40% leak down on the exhaust valve. the intake is fine.

this fall im having everything replaced again even what i did before, even if its redundant, i just want competition to make sure its 100%.. its gonna be expensive either way (approx 1500 compared to 6 hundred i payed local parts and labor).

you are right though, its usually #3 that goes. last year it was 3. im kinda dumb founded why it would be 1 this time.

yes.. i do need a new co-pilot.

Have you ever had valve problems other than your CA trips?

My car let me down only once... After i changed my headgasket and was putting it together...i kinda forgot to tighten the bolt that holds the rotor. After about a day of driving, my car stalls. Thanks to pelican forums..i was on the road the next day.

*Knock on wood* mine has never left me on the side of the road, only time it didn't start once was because of fuel line freeze, one can of Isopropyl alcohol later it was back to normal. I've driven it through the coldest Minnesota winters, -30 degrees with a 60 below wind chill? No problem for the 944. Just this summer I dodged a bullet, took the car in for the big t-belt/water pump service and the timing belt was so loose that it was slapping against the cover, and one of the rollers was cracked as well. Oops! Other than a few annoyances like small fluid leaks, the car runs like new with 108,000 miles on it.

I'm not going to count the time the little heater return hose from the pipe to the waterpump split in the middle of the afternoon at work. Car was parked at work and someone said "Hey you got coolant running out from under youor car" or the time I left the fog lights on when I went into my favorite foreign car parts shop and was shooting the breeze for an hour. But as far as stranded on the side of the road, never in the 2 years I've had her. Not even when I blew out the rubber clutch hub at the auto cross. Was able to nurse her along untill the chunks got out of the way and the clutch got me arround for a couple weeks till I could do a clutch job.

oh i forgot to mention the time when my new electronic ignition decided to give up the goat in north carolina in spring of 2003. swapped it back out for points and condensor on the side of the road and retimed it with a static timing light (test light). worked good enough to get me home.

Ok, I need to check most of those boxes...

Car blew a headgasket, mine and the car's fault right after purchase.

Locked keys in multiple times and learned how to break in via screwdriver and sunroof.

Blew Tranny and really stranded myself.

Ignition relay/tumbler fritzed, nearly stranded many times.

AC bracket failure didn't let battery charge for squat, the squeeling belt at college was some pretty dark times! A few push starts here...

Spun my #2 Sr year of PSU, nearly stranded in Ohio (Thanks Clark). Stranded for 3 months as we built my motor so it won't break again!

And wouldn't you know it, I have had nearly 0 problems since after many hard track days! I think it has something to do with it not being my primary mode of transportation...
