Default Origin of 944 Transmission

Just wondering to see if my information is correct. Aren't the transmissions that are present in 944's from Audi/VW, specifically the Audi 5000. Any other information would be helpful.

thanks

I think the early cars had the vw/audi gearbox, the later cars had a genuine porsche "manual" gearbox. The automatic was still from VW/Audi.
I'm not 100% positive on this one so somebody can correct me if I'm wrong.

From what I understand, the early gearbox (the ones that look like a snail) was made by Audi. The later gearboxes (the ones that look like a 911/racing transmission pointed backwards) were made by Porsche using Porsche synchromesh gears.

That's what I know.

ALL 944 and Turbo trans are based on Audi units. Only the 924 "dog leg" gear change trans are Porsche. The 968 6-speed is also Audi.

I was just re-assembling some new synchro rings on my 88 Turbo S transmission and they all have Audi markings on them.

I'm pretty sure all of the 944 transmissions were based on Audis. That big empty hole in the front of them (where the TT attaches to the transmission bellhousing) was originally designed to have a clutch in there, at least in the audis.

For a while I was trying to figure out if stock Audi lsd units would fit in 944 trannys, as a used Audi lsd should be lots cheaper than a Porsche unit. But I gave up, however they do share a common quiafe part number.

Yeah, if you can even FIND a stock Audi LSD. They're even tougher to locate than the Porsche ones. A Quaife or Guard torsen unit is next for me...
