I know the door speakers are very shallow, and in reading the posts, it seems difficult to find a replacement...are the rear speakers (4 speaker sysem) the same speakers as what is used in the door?

The rear speakers are the same size. In your 84, you can only install a 4x6" back ther without cutting. The up side is that you don't have to worry about the mounting depth, you have about 4-5" there if you need it.

If your going through the trouble of putting in new speakers in the rear, i would go with a larger speaker than a 4x6. A 4x6 only provides decent sound quality at best, going with a 4.5 or a 6 inch speaker can give you much better sound quality, i feel its worth while if you are going through the trouble to do all that work.

Sure will. There are plenty of threads about what types of speakers are good in the rear. I choose to replace all 4 speakers however. I put Blaupunkt PCx462 4x6m's in the front. They are a little bit of a squeeze, but do fit. I think they may be discontinued, not 100% sure however. Your options for the rear are much more open ended once you go through the process of removing the interior trim. I put Blaupunkt PCx652 6.5's in the rear, it took a little cutting with sheetmetal cutters, but they fit and sound pretty good. Alternativley you could just go for a 4.5 inch speaker and use a 4x6 adapter plate if you dont want to do any cutting.

The only prob here is, if you're going to get into the rears, you may as well go ahead & replace them, as it's kind of a bitch to get to them- the fronts are easy- I would go ahead & do a nice front upgrade, as the front is your traditional sound stage anyway- people have mounted 6.5's up front, although that's normally tough to do- 5.25's are more common, although it's debatable as tom how much better thay are than the 4x6's- you could also get some screens for the door pockets, like on theTurbo S & mount some speakers under the armrest like the Turbo S (M490), 968, etc- I'm putting 6x8's under there, although I've had to go through some trouble to do it... The options are endless & depend on what's all worth to you...
