Pics of my failed Cam Tensioner

Holy SMOKES. Who says the turbo is more expensive?
I did my head gasket and valve job for under $500. I know that didn't include replacing anything (except gaskets and value seals and all that crap), but its no where CLOSE to the 3-4k you'll need to replace this...

I don't think it will cost me $3-4K. I'm taking the head out myself(almost done but I gotta get some cheesehead sockets). Dunno how much it will cost to re-weld the tensioner mounting points but the head work I'm getting done at a local race shop includes:
1. Intake and exhaust ports enlarged and shaped for max gas flow.
2. Combustion chambers contoured and smoothed for most efficient combustion.
3. Valve pockets relieved for max gas flow.
4. Valve seats ground to a precise 3-angle racing seat.
5. Entire head glasspeened to clean and stress-relieve.
6. Valve springs shimmed to the correct installed height.
7. Head-to-block surface milled true(up to .020")
plus $20 buck for each port to be ported
I could get all this done for around $600-700 not including parts. I found valves to run between $25-30 but I don't know how many valves were damaged yet if any. I could just get it repaired at the same shop for about half that price but I figure while I have there get at least the basic head mods.

I think the tensioner for the 944S is the same part number for the S4. One think we discovered with my chain braking is the ports on the S motor are larger than the S4's. Maybe the valve's are larger and the springs tighter?

The lowest price was from here:
Intake valves
Exhaust valves
Which according to you guys looks like an excellent deal.

Why not go to a 5 angle valve grind? These come standard with a 3 angle grind.
Good luck with the porting... hopefully they know what they are doing. This ain't no chevy.
Have the head checked for cracks before any of this is done.

[i] The other thing is that it does not have the LSD or the M030 package, like I though (at least according to the options sticker in the trunk). The owner said that it had both of those options, but I don't think he deceived me, I just think he thought it did. [/B]

If you had M030 and the LSD both of those option codes would be on the sticker in the trunk... i don't have either options, but i do have the M030 Sway bar only option!!!

So, just a follow up question...are you comfortable with the 100k mile mark as the upper end of safety on the tensioner issue? Have you or anyone else compiled any data on these failures and at what mileages they occurred.
Just curious if age has anything to do with, or is it strictly mileage. I have heard 90k is a good interval, but I have nothing to substantiate it with. Drew has a little over 130k miles on his. Guess his went longer than most.
Anyone know what size 12 point fits the cam bearing bridges? Wish my original diagnosis had been incorrect.

Dsalillas,
Get a reputable machine shop to weld that mounting ear back on your head. I am in the process of getting my car back together after the same exact thing happened to mine. But I had to buy 2 cams due to broken teeth. Check out these pictures of the weld job I got. The machinist strenghtened the mounting points by bridging the gap on the tensioner mount to the metal surrounding the springs.

aribop,
that welding job looks pretty nice, and clever as well.
Dsallilas, it cost me $175 to have a local aluminum welder connect the tensioner mount back to the head, but he was not specifically an auto head welder, plus he did no other repair to the head. he even left a small amount of welding overlay in the spark plug hole, which i had to burr out so i could squeeze the spark plug socket down in the hole. make sure your repair job is a good one!

The shop that did the work was recommended to me by the shop foreman at Jim Ellis Porsche in Atlanta. The guy was extremely knowledgeable about our cars. I am very happy with the outcome.
