So I'm replacing my 89 944 gas tank. Before I get into the nitty-gritty of this, is there any hints/tips from folks who have done this before?

I've already drained the tank, disconnected and removed the sender up top, removed the bottom shields and fuel pump and disconnected the two tank straps.

So, does the transaxle need to be dropped for this? Or can it be worked around? Any other suggestions?

Drop the transaxle.

It's a plastic tank...Retro Automotive in Claremont, NH has about a dozen of them sitting on the shelf awaiting shipment....If yours needs replacing..
