Default Early 944 Gauge Lighting

Any suggestions on improving the gauge lighting on early 944? I saw that long thread on late model lighting improvements, and every now and then, some sad soul (like me) with an 84 would pop in and ask - does it work for an early model ? - and I never saw an answer...anyone have a solution for pre 1985.5 models? and don't suggest I just go ahead and buy a 951 turbo....Thanks

I have heard if you clean the contacts on the dimmer switch can help the lighting. You can also try cleaning and changing the bulbs. The replacement i believe is Sylvania #2721, thats what i used when i blew some of the lights if i recall correctly. I have heard that you can add a grounding wire by splicing into wiring harness behind the dash.

I found that just replacing the bulbs increased brightness by ~150%, maybe as much as 200%.
The bulbs are cheap, they can tell you compatible sources at any auto-parts store - shouldn't be more than a few bucks.
Just make sure that they're <3A I think?! IceShark knows the value to stay under, I can't be sure with this memory...

It just basically involves popping out each of the gauges from the dash. Just reach under and first push out the gas/temp gauge. Then disconnect the wire harness, then repeat the same for the speedo and tach. The lights plug right into the rear of the gauges.

I just checked the 924Board.org tech section, they recommended Sylvania #2723. These put out 2.3w i think. 2721 is the OEM type replacment im pretty sure.
